I’m always surprised by how expensive lamps are. It’s one part of decorating our home that I really refuse to spend serious money on.
I found this beaut at Savers for $9.99. What I was really looking at was the size and shape of the lamp. I thought this one would work well in our living room.
I wanted something neutral but with a little texture to jazz things up a bit. I searched for some “Pin-spiration” and found a tutorial for this cool looking knock off Pottery Barn Tuscan Urn.

As you can see above, I started by taping off the area I didn’t want painted with some painters tape. I did an all over coat in white chalk paint first (doesn’t have to be perfect, you’re just doing a base coat to cover the designs). I also purchased some textured spray paint. I used Krylon’s “Stone, Coarse Texture in White Onyx”, but you can totally use creative liberties here. Pick from different brands or textures from wherever you are shopping next.
After coating the lamp with white (or any opaque color you choose), do an all over coat with the Stone texture spray paint. This stuff is really cool and just spits out texture as you spray and winds up looking like real stone. With spray paint the key is to do light coats and wile continuously moving. Do a couple coats until it all looks uniform and then wait to dry.
I let the lamp dry overnight and then used painters tape again, leaving only the bottom of the lamp exposed. The key step here is to tear the bottom of the tape, leaving a rough unfinished edge. It gives it a natural chipped look. Don’t overthink it! I made the line curve all around the lamp with the unfinished edge. I kind of think it makes it look a little more artsy.
Spray the bottom of the lamp in a contrasting color. I chose this Krylon brown hammered textured spray paint, but honestly I don’t think I needed another texture on top of the stone. I purchased an inexpensive new lamp shade to finish off the project.
I am pretty happy with the end result and would love to use this stone textured spray paint on another project! Maybe I will do a vase next.
